For intricate curves and scrollwork on a band saw, a narrower blade (1/8" to 1/4" wide) with a high tooth count (e.g., 10-14 TPI) is ideal. The narrower width allows for tighter turns.
The general rule is to have at least 3 teeth in contact with the workpiece at all times. For thin materials, use a higher TPI (e.g., 10-14 TPI). For thicker, softer materials, use a lower TPI (e.g., 2-4 TPI).
Yes, band saws can cut metal, but you need a specialized bi-metal or carbide-tipped blade designed for metal cutting, along with a slower blade speed. Standard woodworking blades will dull quickly on metal.
Common causes include incorrect blade tension (too loose or too tight), worn-out thrust bearings or blade guides, forcing the cut, or using a blade that is too wide for the curve being cut.
Proper tension is crucial. Most manufacturers provide a tension guide, but a common method is to tension until the blade deflects slightly (about 1/4") when pressed firmly with a finger, or by listening for a specific "ping" sound when plucked.
Carbon steel blades are economical and good for general woodworking. Bi-metal blades have high-speed steel teeth welded to a flexible backing, offering superior durability, heat resistance, and cutting performance for harder woods and metals.
